Seamlessly moving in to second semester?
Project Proposal
Mundane.
I have been intrigued by the ephemeral nature of the moment and ways of recording and collecting instance. Interested in the presentation of work as a means of adding to the story of the work, museological collections and displays.
Focusing on everyday occurrences, I hope to pinpoint and highlight some of the seemingly mundane instances/objects of everyday life and alter their authority through deconstruction of the event/object and new context as ‘art’ in order to make the viewer question the importance of such things. I look at process and documentation of process, exploring new ways of recording and ephemeral practice. Finding the extraordinary or unexpected in everyday situations.
Currently I am looking at the notion journey, specifically walking (but this has scope to expand to more methods of moving - an act of travelling from one place to another, as well as looking at the possibilities of journeys in time, physically and emotionally).
time, its passage and marking,
I work in an intuitive-experimental led process, this will open up more doors for further exploration of previously un-thought of ideas.
Possible physical outcomes:
- Explore boundaries of print
- Book art and bookworks.
- Multidisciplinary work: installation, performance, social, site specific works, collection and collation, presentation. Juxtaposition of object.
By documenting and evaluating different outcomes via different approaches, I hope to be able to achieve my aim through my practice-led research.
I plan to have numerous peer critiques in order to learn from others about work I make, this is an invaluable resource of understanding my own work in relation to other around me.
My work deals with ideas of the lost, overlooked in physical forms, but also more ephemeral values. I hope for my practice to cover many mediums, including, but mot limited to assemblage, installation, performance, video, photography, painting, drawing, print and book art. My work deals with the physical and present object as well as the ephemeral.
I feel as though my ideas have a broad scope for further exploration and creation of work through experimentation as well as concise, deliberate production.
Gathering is an appropriate word for my research as it is a part of what I do in my practice. Through reading I hope to gain a better understanding of other artists who are making work in the same field as I am, a means of contextualizing my work.
Currently reading: A Book About Nothing, my work deals with the mundane, an overlooked ‘nothing’ in the worlds eyes.
Plan to read:
- Lippard, Lucy (1973) Six Years: The Dematerialization of the Art Object, Studio Vista, London
- Locus + (eds.) (2000) Locus solus: site, identity, technology in contemporary art, London, Black Dog
- Smithson, Robert (1996), The Collected Writings ed. Jack Flam, University of California Press, Berkeley and Los Angeles
- Doherty, Claire (2004) From Studio To Situation, Black Dog Publishing, London
- Dewey, John (2005) Art As Experience, Pedegree Books
Precedents: the dérive, psychogeography. I would like to further explore these ideas though both practice led and theoretical research.
On Kawara is an artist whose work concerns passage and marking of time. He also uses mail as a mean of art, this is a concept I am interested in and would like to explore further.
I will be attentive to the world and my environment, always seeking to discover and learn from what is around me.
My journal will be an account of my thoughts and ideas as well as a place where I gather research and contextualise my work. It will be a place where I will hone my language and voice as a means of backing up my studio practice.
Documentation of my work will consist of physical outcomes; collections of objects, installations, events, performances, videos, bookworks, drawings, prints, preparatory works and photography of such things. A trace of what I have done. I will use a blog to keep images and videos of my work. Photography will serve as a means of documentation as well as a means of outcome.
